I know that I have only two tiny parts of "Toad" mosaic, but while that mosaic is easier for me, you can see the rest of "Toad" only after completion of that mosaic

I don't like this sequence so much. It becomes obvious that the seal would be fine if he fell, and I have a feeling that the seal that’s rescued is not the same one that was in "danger".
Elma Milotte usually filmed kids, while Alfred Milotte filmed beach masters/males.

Continue "Seal Island". No "Mr. Toad" right now, sorry - you need to wait a little bit.
This mosaic is probably the easiest mosaic that I ever did - because there are only two names in(except animator in opening and closing).

All footage by Elma Milotte. It's very easy to capture that baby seals - she can ever touch them.

I want said to Zartok that I don't exactly right about Jack Bruner as assistant director, but at least, who can be Algar's assistant on this films? What Jack Bruner do after his credited cartoon with Nichols or when that unit was closed? Jack Bruner was credited on draft of "Mickey's Delayed Date" dated 3/6/46. On draft of "Mr. Toad" dated 11/18/48. He can change his director during this period. And, assuming like Zartok that assistant directors can't work for various directors at the same time, we can think that from 1948 Bruner worked with Algar.

Another much high possible assistant director of Algar is Ervin L. Verity. He was credited from mid 50th as production manager of every Algar's film. Soooo...

Animation of Pluto in "The Eyes Have It"

Usually, I can't find any interesting in Jack Hannah's shorts, but I catch nice loosy animation of Pluto in cartoon "The Eyes Have It".

Look:

We can see similar scenes in various parts of cartoon, but that's the first one.
Who animated that? I guess it's Hugh Fraser, it looks like his style. But I can be wrong. In the credits we can see names of Bob Carlson, Hugh Fraser, Don Patterson and John Reed.

We continue Part 16, that we started in the early february. While Sibley's animation doesn't contain anything special, I really like Woolie's expressions in scenes 19 and 22...

I know that Woolie worked on "Mr. Toad" on Escape part, but I don't assume that he worked on that part...but I know that animators like John Sibley and Hal King worked on it. But I suggest to see more Toombs here...

IMBD says that Jack King worked as an animator on this cartoon. IMDB is wrong - they just don't know about Hal King back then...

Female seals come in. As Elma Milotte said, she's back on the island from that point, and did the most of the footage. Alfred usually worked with male seals, maked "danger shots", they said.

I don't like that sequence so much. The burlesque style music that used when the female seals come to the island is slightly embarrassing. Sure, Algar's team wanted to do something to entertain people, but that music that they used sounds compelete out of film.

I have a feeling that I miss one scene...
Marc Davis supervised this sequence, plus Jack Boyd worked on effects. Through Davis is credited as animator of all scenes, I think that guard was animated by Hugh Fraser, but I can be wrong.
Charles Philippi and Al Zinnen worked on layouts, and I think that Zinnen was better layout artist than Philippi - he, at last, add something interesting in sequences with usual Philippi's blandness.

It's kinda strange that Davis is credited as "character animator", not as "directing animator". I suppose that they give that credited only to that type of guys, who have more footage than anyone else in BOTH parts of package film. And don't forgot about functions of "directing animator", anyway.

Birds was filmed somewhere in the summer, but when seals don't actually come in.

I don't understand so much why birds sequence was put in this film, but as part of the place that they called "Seal Island", it's actually works - they trying to show us who live there(except seals).

It's surprised me that Don Lusk worked on the biggest part of that sequence. After all sequences with directing animators I guess that Eric Larson worked on it. But Lusk is good animator too!
Marc Davis worked on one scene in this cartoon, but it's not just one dark scene by Davis - it was part of larger sequence with him. I hope I can complete next sequence tommorow.

Of course, Ward Kimball worked on train sequence! His style was clear to see, and he was really the best guy to work on that sequence. Two full scenes re-uses.
No surprises for me in effects animators, but Harvey Toombs surprised me in underwater scenes. I suspect that animators like Don Lusk or Judge Whitaker worked on that. Anyway, I don't ready to see Toombs here, I even don't ready for so much Toombs at all!

George Rowley is credited on one scene with water effects and Toad's hands. I have a guess that Rowley also worked on that scenes.

Woolie in action, yea! Don Lusk is here(what did do?replaced Woolie later?). Al Zinnen on layouts. I think it's evident that first scene was done by Jack Boyd.

I have a strange feelin that this sequence was directed by James Algar - it looks different that other sequences..

Hello.
We all know that we use mosaics with cartoons, but why we can't use it with live action? For the first time, I want to made it with Disney's first True-Life Adventure "Seal Island"(1948).
There are only wto photographers - Elma and Alfred Milotte. Elma Milotte was interviewed in 1985 - I'm lucky to saw this full interview last summer in Greece on Discovery Channel(ENG).This mosaic shows who shot what in this film, plus tiny animated insert.

Credits was completed after live action. It was directed by Special Effects Department - Ub Iwerks.
The rest of this film is directed by James Algar. Elma Milotte was credited as "researcher", but actually, she was a photographer with her husband, Alfred Milotte.
Animated insert - here we met George Rowley(effects), Art Riley(backgrounds) and Robert Cormack(layout). Interesting, what happened with Cormack after this film- he left the industry...
Millotes arrived on island 26 May 1946, after trip on Alaska, photograph eskimos. Seals don't here yet, but they enjoyed filming of another life - flowers and another animals.
I hope it's interesting for someone, because it's interesting for me now!

Two mosaics in one day! Wow!

"Sad" animation by Ollie Johnston. When I watch this cartoon at the first time, I assume that Frank Thomas worked on the whole sequence. I was wrong...through, Ollie is a great chose too! Don't ready to see Hal Ambro. Don't sure that he worked on the very last scene - looks like effects animator worked on it.

The last of trial sequences. Rudy Larriva worked on Winky. I'm think that he did good job here, he's a nice animator, but he is slow. Larriva left WB in 1942 or 1943 to go to army, the worked for Disney, and worked unitl 1949, the time when this cartoon was released. But Alberto's page gave us the information that Larriva must have animated this between 2/25/46 and 5/28/47.

It's sad for me that James Algar worked only on one sequence on this cartoon - I assumed that he worked on more sequences. But he wasn't so interested in cartoons at this time and worked on it only when he wasn't busy with another project. So, this sequence is example.
It's not surprise that we can see assistant director Jack Bruner here - he worked alongside Algar for years. Scene when Rudy Larriva is credited actually a re-use of animation from sequense 5. Don't worry, we can the "real" Larriva later!
I'm amazed with workd of Hugh Fraser - he worked on the whole sequence! In fact, he worked on directing animator kind of footage!

Al Stetter is rather mystery Disney animator for me. He was credited as effects animator on "Put-Put Troubles" back in 1940, and now he turned into character animation.

Harvey Toombs...MY GOD, HARVEY TOOMBS! He was one of that type of animators, who was in shadow of Nine Old Men for years. It's hard to tell about his animation skills, but he was very respected by various directors, Jack Kinney for example.
Kinney appreciate his talents, and eventually it's turned out in situation like this - Harvey Toombs worked on all scenes in that sequence.

After another part without supervising animator, we'll back to good ol' Frank Thomas. He worked on the big part of that sequence, and he done a good job. I wonder if Bob Youngquist really worked on that scene when he was credited, because his drawings looks the same as drawings by Marc Davis. Of course, we can talk about scene 31 by Bill Justice and scene by Hal King, but in that scenes difference is clear to me - horse's eyes and mouth looks different...and don't you notice painter error with Toad's pants?

Writer-animator Al Bertino worked on that sequence too. He worked on a couple of scenes with car. In one of those scenes he was credited with Harvey Toombs - can we give the credit to Bertino for another scene with Harvey?

Very funny sequence. To be honest, Hugh Fraser is the best animator here, in my opinion. His animation is very live, well staged and cartoony a bit. It's sad that he worked only on 6 scenes, because he was amazing on that characters.
Murray McClellan is very middle animator. He worked on features since 1939, but he wasn't very good animator, imo.
Harvey Toombs' animation works well, he worked on action scenes. Don't know what to say about Judge, but his animation is better than McClellan's.

It's another small sequence for today. I hope I can do more "mosaic-a-day" during this days.

The second small part of "Opening" sequence. Secretary Jane Sinclair acts as assistant director, as well. I guess that scene 1 was animated by Milt Kahl, because he animated the same scene in next sequence. Maybe I wrong....
Henry Tanous and Clair Weeks is new names for me. In case, it's one their first cartoons. In my eyes, Weeks animation was better than Henry's...
And I just guess that last scene was animated by Don Lusk! Why? Well, because, as we can see, Lusk mostly animated birds in Disney's cartoons - in "Trees" and in the beginning of "Cinderella" Lusk worked on birds, so, I guess that he worked on that birds too.

So, let's start this mosaic!
Before first part I want to talk with you about people in main titles - SIGN UP!

We're already can hear Bing Crosby on "Ichabod", but we also can hear him on main titles.

It was the first picture for Pat O' Malley at Disney studios. You also can remember him as the Warlus in "Alice....", Jasper in "Dalmatians" and Hathi the Elephant and Buzzie in "Jungle Book".
But the most interesting actor for me is Campbell Grant! Why? Well, because Campbell was one of Disney's characters designers! He started his career as an animator and character designer on "Snow White...", after he made his contribution for "Pinnochio" and "Fantasia". Duruing WWII he worked on Disney's educational films - as a characters designer, storyman and as voice actor. He also worked on story for Goofy short "They're off". In "Mr. Toad" Campbell voiced Angus MacBadger. Sadly, he left the studio after this cartoon - he became well-known illustrator.

Ub Iwerks on special processes, nothing amazing here. During production of cartoon Ub gave some freedom to his assitant, Eustace Lycett, who replaced Iwerks later.
It was the first credit for Al Teeter on cartoon - he worked on "So Dear To My Heart" before.

Wonderful Wallace on musical direction. Ken Darby was closely associated with Disney during late 40th, after this cartoon he moved to Fox.

Writers. It's hard to tell who worked on final story of this cartoons, because this cartoons was in production since early 40th(in terms of story work), but I'm sure that Penner joined team after war. Don't know about Sears - he worked on numerous productions during the whole decade...

I wonder if Mary Blair really worked on any of cartoons, because I simply can't catch any sense of her style here - maybe she worked on forest in "Ichanod". John Hench and Claude Coats contribution is more evident - you can see Hench's drawings in the first part. Claude Coats, as ultimate background artist, supervised another background artists.
Layout team as usual as always. To be honest, I don't like their work on "Toad" and "Ichabod" - all their layouts looks bland and the same. But I hope I can enjoy part of Toad's escape. But as I said before, I just love the layouts by Tom Codrick in the pre-last part on "Ichabod" - the only unusual part in terms of layouts and backgrounds here.
Maybe all this layouts and backgrounds blandness is Claude's fault - he kept artists to make backgrounds the same.

Sadly that they don't credited another good animators, like Ken O' Brien. I wonder why Marc Davis was credited as usual character animator - he worked on one of the whole parts of "Toad", for example - he deserves the better credit!

And directors...

It's a shame that Kinney worked on another feature. As Jack Kinney's collegues said, he don't like to work on features - he like to work on Goofy's shorts!
Of course, Geronimi worked on feature production. I wonder why Jaxon and Luske wasn't here - they ready to work on "Cinderella", I guess. Luske was busy with "So Dear To My Hear" at that time.
So, James Algar was choiced to work on cartoon! I'm very happy to see Algar here. Sadly, he worked on only one sequence. Algar worked on it during the time gap between production of "Seal Island" and "Beaver Valley".

The choice of Ben Sharpsteen as producer was evident. Sharpsteen was Walt's right-hand man after Roy. Walt even can't choice any other producer than Ben - Norm Ferguson is back to animation department, Perce Pearce is moved to England. So, Ben, let's do it!

So, that short sequence was directed by Special Effects department - I guess that Ub Iwerks directed that. John Hench's drawings looks cool.

"Pluto's Christmas Tree"(1952) mosaic!

Well, I'm back...

As we can see, it's one of the very last shorts featuring Mickey Mouse - his career in shorts was ended with "The Simple Things"(1953).
George Rowley was credited effects animator here, while he wasn't credited in draft. From early 50th and on, studio stopped showing the effects animator of scenes with effects, they credited only that scenes, that have specific effects in it. Dan MacManus and Blaine Gibson worked on two scenes in this cartoon. I guess that George Rowley worked on all another scenes with animation effects.

Fred Moore worked on all scenes with Mickey Mouse, he was the master it. Throught, his animation wasn't as good as before, but still nice done. I think that his animation of Mickey in late shorts is the good way to understand late animation of Fred Moore at all. This cartoon featured the last animation that Fred Moore saw in theathers when he was alive - sadly, he's dead four days after released of this cartoon.

George Kreisl, of course, is the star of this shorts. He was in charge of the most shots with Pluto and Chip and Dale. But I don't think that he done this great - yes, his animation is nice done, but very bland for me.
Volus Jones worked on this cartoon too. It's strange to see Volus in charge of this characters - he was Donald Duck animator for years, but as we can remember, Jones worked on Pluto cartoon in early 40th - I like that shots with Pluto that he done. But mostly he worked on Chip and Dale...
Bill Justice? One of the main chipmunks animators! I like his work!

It's one of my all-time favorite Christmas cartoons. I remember watching it on my VHS tape with other Disney Christmas cartoons in my childhood. Ah, memories!

Epilogue. Effects process man Eustace Lycett is credited here. I can't see any special effects here and I don't know why he's credited...maybe you know?

They have a good reuse of the previous scenes here. I wonder why they don't reused scene 1 in scene 3. But I'm happy to see that they presented that bridge to us from the different angles. Ken O'Brien did the nice job. It's nice that Harvey Toombs wasn't animated scenes with family dinner.

Well, the "Ichabod" mosaic is complete! Hans posted draft of "Mr. Toad" today, so, wait for the new mosaic!

"Ichabod"(1949) mosaic: Part 10

Oh gosh...probably it was the hardest mosaic for me...
You know, it's my favorite sequence in "Ichabod"! Frank Thomas really surprised me here. I don't like so much his previous animation in this cartoon. Right here we can really feel that Ichabod is scared, this wood with all that shadows and sounds is really weird place for him. I noticed that Ed Aardal credited in a couple of scenes. Ed started his work as an effects animator, but later he moved to characters animation, and we can see his characters animation with minor effects animation quality, its nice.
And Ward Kimball is here! I just love his shots with scared Ichabod and horse!

But Woolie Reitherman, of course, on the top! Horseman's animation once again rerpesented Wollie as a master of broad action and dramatic staging. Woolie always compare himself to others and eventually, he made his work harder.
It's cool if John Sibley worked on Horseman too, I think thar only Woolie worked on that character. But I was not amazed by Sibley's work with Horseman. I was amazed by scene 68. Damn, it's so much power and weight in this scene!

And another reason for my love of this sequence is good layouts and backgrounds work.One of the things that I don't like in "Ichabod" is rather the same colored backgrouds, it looks very boring, but the last pre-last sequence is good exception.

Tom Codrick was one of the best layout artist at the studio, hw really know how to make scenes with depth. In the credits we can see a couple of artists who worked on color and styling - it's Claude Coats, Mary Blair, Don da Gradi and John Hench. We can only guess who styled this sequence. I guess it's Mary Blair...
I like that when Ichabod in damage, Horseman was neard, scenes was colored in red. It's looks especially impressive to me when they changed in the scene. I can catch it in scenes 61 and 62 for example.
It's really joy for me to watch this sequence. I hope you enjoy it to. Have fun!

"Buddy's Beer Garden"(1933) mosaic!

I made some research on this about two months ago, asking people on GAC forums(RIP) and trying to guess animators of WB cartoon called "Buddy's Beer Garden". I upload this mosaic for Steven Hartley, if he's able to review this cartoon.

Jack King and Frank Tashlin was the major animators here. It seems like Jack was the best of em - he worked at Disney, you know...Frank Tashlin was the only animator of that big guy. Tashlin worked as an animator and comic strip artist before at NY and his style and characters looks like comics characters that comes to life.

Paul Fennel joined Leon's studio with Jack King and Tom Palmer, and Chuck Jones was his assistant as I heard. It was one of the first cartoons when Chuck worked as an animator - characters looks like they was made of baloons.

Hi.It's another draft, this time from Freleng's cartoon. Paul Ignatiev, who's grandfather(Alex Ignatiev) always worked with Chuck Jones, worked with Friz too, and save the rest of this draft!

And now we back to Ichabod...

Milt Kahl is the best animator here. Milt's animation of Brom is really very fast and live - love scenes 4,8, 10 and 37. And once again Harvey Toombs animate Ichabod while he's eating. Ken O'Brien worked on Katrina. It's sad that we can't see more animation by Ken, he was really good animator. He worked at Disney studio before and left studio with Fred Moore to work at Walter Lantz studio.

Comparing Harvey's, King's and Ambro's animation of Ichabod, I can say that King's animation is less appealing. Yea, he drew Ichabob well, but his interpretation of him is not as interesting as Ambro's or Harvey's.
And I was really amazed by the last shot, done by Ollie Johnston....

Here is the new mosaic with identifications from Mark Kausler. Opening was done by Hugh Harman, one of the earliest Disney's animators. His brother, Fred Harman, invited him there. He worked on some great scenes later, like on scene 12, when Pete chewing gum(we can see a lot of this scenes in later Harman-Ising cartoons) and scenes 15, 17 and 45.
Animator named Ben Clopton worked on this cartoon, he was Ub Iwerk's assistant, probably the first assistant in animation history(don't confuse with Art Davis - he was the first inbetweener). Sorry that I miss a couple of scenes....
Two scenes was done by Friz Freleng. Disney studio was just the beginning for him, and he isn't happy there.

Rollin Hamilton's animation looks very good and rubbish, 20th rubbish. His drawings are very crude, but it's looks great. Sadly, Hamilton's career(as Clopton's career too) was toned down in the late 30th. It's a shame that Rollin was forgotten in the 30th, I'm sure that he can be a great director in the 40th. Yea, we know that if guy was great animator, it don't automatically means that he can be a great director(Robert McKimson).
Ub Iwerks was the best animator in this cartoon. I just love his scene 30 - character was drawned in very three-dimentional way.

You can see that this short doesn't featured another earliest Disney's animators, like Rudy Ising, Les Clark or Paul Smith. It's because they worked on the last Alice Comedies at that time, and sometimes animators was bouncing between series.

So, lets' see...Sid Sutherland worked on whole scenes with Elmer's backpack, while Cornett Wood was in charge of that big backpack. Probably, animating this backpack was too hard for Sid, so, Cornett handled it and gave to this backpack effects animation quality. And they animate Elmer and his hat on seperate levels...
Bob McKimson steps in the game since scene 10. Interesting, how he worked with Sid together. I think that only McKimson worked on Bugs and Elmer.

Rod Scribner is amazing as always. 1942 was very interesting year for Scribner's animation - he's still have a lot of wrinkles on his characters, as in Avery's unit, and begins to evolve to his totally wacky, Clampett's style. His animation of Bugs probably the most appealing in the whole cartoon!

Howard Swift worked on Bugs too - he was at Warners at that time, before joining Columbia.
Lee J. Ames, another ex-Disney animator, worked on effects, but also he animate Elmer's hand in scene 18.
Rev Chaney was credited on three scenes in these cartoon, but I don't think that he worked on scene 33 - it looks more like Ross' work.
What I noticed in this cartoon is use of "dry brushes" - it can tell to us about skills of inker's/painters!
I'm little confused with some Virgil's scenes. Scene 22,24, 25 and 26 looks like he's done it, but when I compare that scenes to scenes 29, 32 and 36, I was a bit confused - it looks like Ross' scenes, but his style of drawing was a little bit changed, maybe it was done by another animator.

"Ichabod"(1949) mosaic: Part 9

Jack Kinney is gone, and now Clyde Geronimi takes the rest of cartoon. And we can see the immediatelly replacement of layout artists here - Chas Philippi, Thor Putham and Lance Nolley is gone, and Kinney's main layout artist, Al Zinnen, was replaced by Geronimi's Tom Codrick. Codrick was amazing layout artist, but I guess that right here he worked only on two outside scenes, while Don Griffin worked on the house.

Ollie Johnston, Woolie Reitherman, Milt Kahl and Frank Thomas worked on it. Ollie's drawings was very appeal - I just love his dancing scenes.
Frank Thomas did a good job on Brom and Ichabod, his animation here is very loose, and I was just amazed when I first saw Frank's scene 31 - it was the beautiful harmony between characters and backrounds, like in "Pinocchio", during the song "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee".
Milt Kahl's drawing is good too, but for me the fat lady don't looks like she was drawn by Kahl, until scene 21. Also I think that Ward Kimball worked on scene 47.

Woolie Reitherman, indeed, is the star of this sequence. You know that Woolie was the great in dramatic action scenes, but he can animate comedy scenes as well. He's always worked very hard and stopped at nothing to show all what he can into a scene, and Woolie's scenes in "Ichabod" is not exeption! We can feel the real power on his scenes - sense of anger(scenes 50,32),weight(33), beautifull timing, sense of character's speed(52) ang gentleness(46).

Oh my god, I finally got a chance to post WB draft! I have only one page now, but I hope I can post more later!
WB used Disney-type of drafts in the 1939/eary 40th - you can easily see "seq no" and "seq.tittle" here.

Directed by Fred Avery. Assistant director Landsman(?) - his "assistant director" tittle sounds strange, because WB don't even had a single assistant director. No number of draft and date. They even don't have layout artist's and secretary's names.No "screen footage", no "B.G. data(empty).

The second cartoon with Snafu! Lloyd Vaughan was on "trial run" here. I think that scene 13 wasn't actually animated by Ben Washam - it looks a lot like Bob Cannon's work. Strong Ken Harris' scenes. One scene by ex-Disney animator Ray Patin. I found interesting that in scene 31, when Snafu looks down he looks like his animator, Bob Cannon. I hope you understand me.

Great sequence. I really love it for that since scene 6 and until scene 40 we don't hear the voice of narrator.It gives for the better music direction and animators work on the characacter's feelings to being synchronized with music. Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston was the main animators here.Also it's of the key moments of the film - Brom's rivalry with Ichabod was finally settled up!

Scenes 50 and 53 is credited to Johnston, but can it been done by Woolie Reitherman, master of fighting scenes?

Ichabod by Frank Thomas was done fine, he gave him enough good face expresions.
Hal Ambro done a couple of scenes with Brom and one scene with the whole "gang". I think that he also done scenes 6 and 7, when we can't see Ichabod closely.

But(overall) I think that of all directing animators in this cartoon Ollie Johnston is the best. All his scenes with Ichabod, Katrina and another girls is so warmth, so subtlety that makes him the great anmator here.
Milt Kahl and Woolie Reitherman was the very good animators of action and they have all that Ollie have too. But only Ollie's animation here looks as warmth as it can be in this cartoon.
I think that good analysis(a lot more depth than mine) of Ollie's scenes in this cartoon could be the good inspiration for animators to do sincere, emotional work with people faces.

Finally got time for part 6...

Once again Fred Moore worked on Katrina. John Sibley joined the team. His drawings looks a lot like in Woodward's scene with Ichabod. Sibley is known best for his animation of Goofy in Kinney's shorts, and he was probably the best Goofy animator in the 40th. Sadly, Sibley was viewed as a B-animator at the Disney studio. But he was very talented, you know!

He was paired with Moore on scenes 13 and 16, and did a nice job. I wonder how he animated Ichabod when he walked hand in hand with Katrina.

We also have two scenes with Ichabod by Fred Moore. His clear poses is much looser, cuter and appeal that Lounsbery's, Clark's or any other's.
~~Milt Kahl~~ Hal King is really surprised me here. Brom's face expressions is really great, we can totally feel what he feel!
Maybe Milt Kahl did the key character layouts in this scenes and King animated it. But the version that Kahl worked on this scenes is more obvious.

"Ichabod"(1949) mosaic: Part 5

Another sequence that stars non-directing animator, and this time we've met Harvey Toombs!
Toombs was promoted to full animator during the production of "Pinocchio", and worked on number of Disney's projects later. As for me, i've never recognize him as a great animator, but he's work is still good.
I found interesting that scene №2 was reused later in Goofy cartoon "Teachers Are People"(1952). Of course, Jack Kinney worked on it, but we can see that layout man Al Zinnen worked on it too!

This sequence, in my opinion, looks like the way to making of longer footage for the film.We don't discover anything new - this sequence just shows us Ichabod's dreams of his ambitions.
I don't know, who worked on Katrine here(maybe it's really Toombs), but it's definitely not Fred Moore.

Fred Moore' girl. Looks like he was the supervising animator of this sequence. Of course, he worked on all scenes with Katrina. We all know that Moore was toned down in the late 40th - he don't able to have the "supervising animator" position, but when they worked on girls, I believe that they knew that Moore is the best man for it
But I don't think that he worked on guys - I think Ward Kimball or Ollie Johnston done it. First Marvin Woodward scene in this film. Two scenes by Les Clark. Wonderful song in the background.

Various small sequences here. It's surprising for me to see Eric Larson on sequence 3. Boys looks like they was drawn by Ward Kimball, so, I don't think that Hugh Fraser really worked on them. Or maybe Hugh don't worked on this sequence at all, maybe Kimball worked on the whole sequence.
Jack Boyd was credited on last scene with calendar. I also think that he worked on scene 6 in sequence 3 and on scene 4 in sequence 3-2.

"Ichabod"(1949) mosaic: Part 1

I'm start to work on "Ichabod" mosaic. If somebody don't like that I named this part of Disney package feature as "Ichabod", I can change the tittle to the "Legend of Sleepy Hollow".

This sequence was directed by Jack Kinney and Gerry Geronimi. Draft doesn't have any assistant directors, but I guess that some regulars like Ted Sebern or Jack Bruner worked on it.
Hans Perk said that Hal King worked on it, but at the same time, Jack King was toned down from director to animator position, and I heard that he worked on feature too...
Milt's scenes was the very best in this sequence, his drawings was very, very solid.
It's nice to see Volus Jones in this picture at all. Jones is usually worked on Jack Hannah's Duck pictures, so it's nice to see him to work on someting else.
I don't think that John Lounsbery worked on all scenes when he was credited. Of course, he was the supervising animator on Ichabod, because drafts showing the responsible animator for a certain scene, who might be able to help in case there would be any need for this further on in the production line.

EDIT: Geronimi don't worked on this sequence, it's pure Kinney's stuff!

"Snow White..." mosaic: Part 14

Steven Hartley, who worked on mosaic of "Snow White...", don't have any time to work on this mosaic, so, from that point, I'm in charge of it...
The next sequence was called as "Entertaiment" on the draft, but I'm prefer to call it as "Silly Song" on the mosaic.

This is a classic sequence that has been remembered a lot by the audiences, it's really funny sequence of the film, as washing sequence...
In the "Disneyland" episode, called "Tricks of Our Trade", we can see they worked on scene 10. They use expressions live-action comedian Billy House as examples for their work.

We don't who worked on the particular sequences of cartoon, but this sequence was widely credited to Wilfred Jackson, with layouts by
Bill Tytla don't animate so much in this sequence, but his work is always extremely good and amazing, no question about it.
We can see that effects animators Paul Busch, Max Gray and Amby Paliwoda was credited on some scenes and I guess that they worked on the rest of the scenes in this sequence.
Fred Moore's animation was amazing. I think that his work on "Snow White..." was the best that he did in his career!
I wonder why Campbell Grant worked on this cartoon as an animator. He was worked at the Disney studio on characters designs, but maybe he was just an animator when he joined Disney studio, I don't know...
Speaking about Ham Luske's work on this sequence - I don't think that ever worked on the 50% of scenes when he was credited. I read on one of the sites that during "Snow White..." production, Ham Luske altered some of the drafts and put his name on scenes he didn't actaully animate, to make his "Directing Animator" position more stronger. So, I guess that he worked only that scenes that doesn't featured another Snow White animator - Marc Davis, Grim Natwick, and on couple of scenes with animals, witch James Algar actually animated...according to Marc's episode of "Disney Family Album", he's animated Snow White in his scene labled on the draft.

"The Inside Story"(1944) by...

I find a very interesting film, created for the U.S. Coast Guard.

This film deals with the typical emotional problems suffered by men entering the military service and how they should be treated. A sailor suffers from knee pain. He goes to the base doctor who finds nothing wrong and refers him to the base psychiatrist. The psychiatrist reassures the sailor and explains how psychosomatic disease arises - in a charming cartoon sequence that gives a Freudian interpretation of how repression and anxiety work in the mental structure and body of an individual.

"R'Coon Dawg"(1951) mosaic

New mosaic of Disney cartoon, with Mickey and Pluto again! Thanks to my friend "Stanly Maric" for help!

For which reasons I love this cartoon? I love this cartoon because of the animators of it! Legends Fred Moore and Norm Ferguson, with Marvin Woodward and director himself worked on it. Jack Boyd was the only credited effects animator here.
This cartoon, as all Disney's 50th cartoons directed by Charles Nichols, shows the low posittions of Moore and Ferguson at the Disney studio...but if Ferguson was back as supervising animator on some feautures, Moore was not even done a lot of job after his back at Disney's...
Fred Moore was changed a lot since of his last work on Mickey, but his poses are still highly personal, he kept Mickey in his new style, and that's why he was the main animator of Mickey in Nichols' unit.
Marvin Woodward's scenes with coon looks like he want to work on Mickey - coon's nose was similar to Mickey's nose in early 40th cartoons!
One of the main reasons why I love this cartoon is Pluto's visions. I really like use of color by this way...

Early Rod Scribner

When Rod Scribner, wildest animator ever, joined Tex Avery unit after his stint with Hardaway-Dalton unit, we can easily see the roots of his style here. Here is the couple of examples:

As we can see, Rod done a lot of really good, nice, appeal animation in Avery's unit. One of the main tricks of Scribner while he was with Avery - narrowed eyes of Bugs Bunny, as in "A Wild Hare" and "Tortoise Beats Hare".What really amazed me, it's that he as realistic as Bob McKimson was! He trying to be grotesque and realistic at the same time, to be precise.

"Canine Caddy"(1941) mosaic!

New mosaic. It's Mickey Mouse cartoon, but Pluto is the main character here, directed by Clyde Geronimi with layouts by Bruce Bushman. Looks like Bushman was the regular layout artist in Geronimi team(before he moved to directing of features). While Jack King, Wilfred and Riley Thompson worked with the best animators at the studio, Geronini was put in charge of supervision of junior animators.

One of the best animator in this cartoon is Ken Muse. I just love scenes with Mickey's ears. Fred Moore seems to have influenced Muse's scenes of Mickey near the beginning - notice the buck teeth, which seem to be a Moore trait.

Emery Hawkins, who was the great animator at Lantz and WB later, worked on this cartoon too.
Charles Nichols is my favorite animator after Muse in ths cartoon. He just loved to animate Pluto, he was one of the best animators of this dog, like legendary Norm Ferguson, and that's why Chuck was promoted to Pluto's director later. I can't said that he was the very good director, sadly. I found his animation in scenes 31,35,46 is the most appeal animation of Pluto in this cartoon.
Beautiful effects animation here. Art Palmer, Brad Case, Ed Aardal, Art Fitzpatrick, Paul Kossoff was great effects animators. It's interesting to see that Art Palmer was worked on sea effects in "Pinocchio" and "Fantasia" and Paul Kossoff worked on lava in "Fantasia", and now, they worked on ground or shadow effects. No respect to effects animators at Disney(except, except Josh Meador)...

"Trees"(1948) mosaic (from "Melody Time")

Hello. I'll post mosaic of one of my favorite sequences from Disney feauture "Melody Time".
The draft says that it was directed by Hamilton Luske, but I think it's directed by Wilfred Jackson, it's VERY Jackson-esque sequence...

The characters animation and effects animation is stunning, it's really amazing work. And the poem and music are magnificent. It's that kind of "Disney music" that we can hear in such stunnig pictures as "Bambi" or "The Old Mill" or in the numereous openings of later feautres. Love it...
I think it's been very good decision to choose Don Lusk as an animator of deers - he have a lot of experience of it while he worked on "Bambi", and we can see that deers in this cartoon is looks like deers from "Bambi".
We can't see who animate what in some of the scenes, so, I did a little guesswork there. I think that Don Lusk worked only on birds, frogs and deers. Don't sure about some effects animators scenes....
Les Clark, one of the Disney's "Nine Old Men", did a good job too, but I think it's not his "best animation ever"...

EDIT: Oops, sorry for the mistake with the number of last scene!

This sequence featured one of the most amazing effects animators ever - Josh Meador, Ed Aardal and George Rowley. Josh Meador was the supervising effects animator at the studio since the late 30th, eventualy replacing Cy Young and Ugo D'Orsi when they leaved the studio.
In my opinion, this is the best sequence in "Melody Time" in terms of animation quality....looks like the late Silly Symphony, or an overflow part from "Fantasia"...

I'm a bit busy this time, so, I divided the mosaic on two parts...

Once again, in this part of mosaic we can see a lot of animation by Phil DeLara. I just love his animation of Porky's toys - looks like he use character maquette for this - we can actually see one in "Porky's Hero Agency"(1937).
One of the best-animated scenes in this cartoon was animated by Bob Cannon. During his early work with Jones he was primary the animator of close-ups, and eventually Cannon become my favorite Jones animator after Bob McKimson left the unit.Maybe Jones choose Cannon to do difficult scenes with personality animation only because he knows Cannon longer than anybody else in his unit, I don't know...
I'm very interested in animation of Ben Washan in scene 60. Look at his eyes - we can see the same proportions in Washam's scenes with Bugs Bunny later. Looks like the roots of Washam's style began here.
Scene 63 was animated by 4 various animators. Look like Ken Harris worked on cat, Phil DeLara worked on toys(in fact, they was re-used!), Rudy Larriva on Sniffles and A.C. Gamer was in charge of all shadows in this scene.

Look at scenes 78-80. The guy named Amby Paliwoda(from Disney) was animator of speed lines in this scenes, and it was the last scenes that Paliwoda worked on before he is drafted.

Don Patterson at Disney

Don Patterson, beautiful Golden Age animator, was born at December 26, 1909 in Chiacgo,IL. He started his cartoon career in Charles Mintz cartoon studio - Screen Gems(Columbia) in the early 30th. A lot of animation legends, like his brother Ray Pattersnon, Preston Blair, Manny Gould and Izzy Ellis worked with him. In 1937 Patterson left the Columbia and and joined Walt Disney Productions. "Mickey's Trailer" was the first cartoon that Don worked on. What's really amazedi me, it's that Don Patterson(as Preston Blair) joined the top animators' team and worked alongside Fred Moore, Vladimir Tytla, Art Babbit, really powerful, top notch animators.
By the fall of 1938, Patterson joined "Pinocchio" production team and then he worked only on features. In "Pinocchio" he was the most notable of his work on toys, but my favorite animation(by Don) in this cartoon was his animation of Pinocchio and Gepetto in "Monstro" sequence:

I cut the scenes in which we can't see Patterson animation.

Interesting animation of "Casey Jr." in "Dumbo. Patterson trying to make this train cartoony. He even worked on "Casey" later.

This is my most favorite Don Patterson scene in Disney cartoon! When I looked at it at the first time, I found it hard to believe that it was done by future Woody Woodpecker animator. This is a very good work.I think it's best scene in his career.Maybe his scenes in "Pinocchio" looks better, but there we can feel professional, robust and more an attractive job.

Sadly, in 1946 Patterson left the studio(Ray Patterson left the studio after the strike). Personally, I think that if he stayed at the studio for the long time, he was able to get a bigger fame, as it happened to Hal King in the 50s...
After Disney Patterson worked with his brother at MGM studio. In 50th, Patterson joined Walter Lantz studio, where he got the animator and director positions. In 1959 Patterson joined Hanna-Barbera studio to work as animator for a looooong time.
Don Patterson died at december 12, 1998 (aged 88)

"Toy Trouble"(1941) mosaic(part 1)

As you can guess by blog' tittle, it's dedicated to mosaics at first, so, I'll post my first mosaic for WB cartoon called "Toy Trouble"(1941).
It's sounds interesting how I got the animators draft of this cartoon. In our russian e-mail hosting, "Mail.ru", I found the grandson of animator Alex Ignatiev - Pavel(Paul) Ignatiev.
I wrote him to know more about his grandfather as animator and asked a question about animation drafts at Warners. So, I even met him, because we live in the same city that i , and he showed me some particular drafts that he have....
Thanks to my friend "Stanly Maric" - he helped me to regulate the size of the first pictures and fix another minor problems.

Mosaic:

This cartoon was directed by Chuck Jones, and its' one of the "disney-esque" cartoons that Chuck made between 1938-1942.
This cartoon features 8 various animators. The most notable in this particular pages(1-2) is animator Phil DeLara. He become an animator in Chuck Jones unit in fall of 1940, as I remember, and first credited in "Saddle Silly". But in fact, it was(probably) the first cartoon that DeLara worked on. His animation of Sniffles is different than another animators. What I really love about DeLara is that he is always able to draw cute characters with cute look - Sniffles in Jones unit, Bugs Bunny in McKimson unit, etc.
Ken Harris was the main cat animator in this cartoon and I guess, was serving at that possition in next Jones' cartoons with cat. Harris animation looks very solid, but I can't said that it looks appeal - even if you is a good animator, you can't make everything' appeal, of course(maybe character model doesn't looks appeal for me at all).
I can't say too much about animators Fred Jones and Harold Soldinger work. I can't catch any "style" in their scenes. Jones and Soldinger worked at WB for a long time, and they never receive their credits. In the end, Jones joined Disney studio. Also, we can see him as an animator in the beginning of the "You Ought to be in Pictures"(1940). Speaking about Soldinger, I don't know when he leaved the studio...
What I found interesting about this part of cartoon is particular scenes with toys. I thought that animators of that scenes was under influence of toys in Disney's "Pinocchio", Don Patterson' animation, i guess. I like toys animation in scene №11 - they moved so naturaly and it's real joy for Monroe - he loved to animate fast(but not so crazy!) scenes in Clampett unit later. Sadly, that scene, as scenes №12-14 and 67 was cuted from many prints of this cartoon and some of us can't see that scenes, it's bad...
It's one of the first cartoons with animation by Ben Washam, and he did some good job here. I just love his animation in scene №32 - it' looks too cartoony for Jones realistic, disney-esque cartoon!
I've talk about Cannon and Larriva later...
You can always saw the effects animators here, like Catherine Gleeson, Rudy Zingler, Robert Atkins, Alex Ignatiev and A.C. Gamer, who was the top notch effects animator at Warners.
